Thunderbirds top Eskis despite Horner’s heroics

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Despite the heroics of Iroquois Falls Eskis goaltender Josh Horner, who finished the night with an incredible 68 saves, the Soo Thunderbirds got a goal and an assist from Jaren Bellini to help propel them to a 4-1 triumph Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena.

Sault Ste. Marie came out flying in the opening 20 minutes outshooting Iroquois Falls 21-5 and were rewarded
with Bellini getting the Thunderbirds in flight 13:15 into the opening stanza as he picked up his third marker of the season.

He then helped set-up a Matthew Caruso marker with three minutes to go in the session.

The Eskis cut the deficit in half 38 seconds into the middle frame as Brett Ouderkirk finished off a feed from David Osborne.

The score stayed that way until early in the third when Matt Pinder picked up his team-leading eighth of the campaign with an unassisted effort.

Despite piling on the shots the T-Birds could not get another past Horner before eventually getting the final goal of the night into an empty net late, courtesy of Matthew Busby.

Brendan Gordon made 20 stops to pick up the win for the Soo.
