Beavers upend Nickel Barons
SUDBURY – Zach Pease tallied twice while Tyler Brown doled out three assists to help the Blind River Beavers upend the Sudbury Nickel Barons 5-3 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McClelland Arena.
The visiting Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play with Pease netting both of the markers for Blind River.
Sudbury stormed back in the middle frame striking times time to grab the lead on goals by Cory Vaillancourt, Marco Lizotte and Ryan Chretien, on the power play.
Fraser Dylan Atkinson then tied the proceedings with his second effort in as many games to knot at the score at 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Breaking the deadlock 5:52 into the final stanza was Samuel Wilbur, who notched the eventual game-winner while extending a season-high point streak to seven games in the process.
The Beavers Myckauly Melanson added some insurance with an empty-net effort in the final minute to round out the scoring.
Brandon Currie turned aside 31 of 34 attempts he faced to secure the victory for the Beavers who ran their record to 4-10-1-2.
Michael Muzyka made 21 saves in a losing cause for Sudbury who fell to 1-7 in their past eight and 9-7 overall on the campaign.
NOJHL action resumes Friday on two fronts with North Bay visiting Elliot Lake while Abitibi entertains Kirkland Lake in a neutral site contest at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex in Timmins. Both match-ups get underway at 7:30 p.m.
