Blind River opens 2013 with road win

KIRKLAND LAKE – The Blind River Beavers got a pair of goals from Tyson MacLeod and a 21-save performance from newly signed goaltender Brock Crossthwaite to help lead them to a 4-3 road victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Blind River jumped out to a two-goal lead after one period on tallies by Travis Jones and MacLeod.

After MacLeod’s second of the evening extended the visitor’s cushion to 3-0 at 7:21 of the middle session, Steven Babin put the Gold Miners on the board two minutes later.

The Beavers’ Corey McEwan would net the eventual game-winner before the frame was out to make it a 4-1 game after 40 minutes.

Kirkland Lake mounted a third period comeback getting goals from Dustin Jesseau and one courtesy of Jean-Michel Naud with 1:12 to go, but that’s as close as the home side would get in suffering the loss.

Crossthwaite was victorious in his Blind River debut helping his new club improve to 7-17-2-4 on the campaign.

Chris Komma faced 23 shots in a losing cause for his side as the Gold Miners slipped to 16-12-2-1.

Both sides return to game action Saturday with the Beavers heading to Iroquois Falls to take on Abitibi while Kirkland Lake is back on the ice at The Joe as they begin a weekend home-and-home with the North Bay Trappers. Each match-up will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
