Blind River’s Liarakos strikes late to upend Espanola

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – A Yianni Liarakos goal with just nine seconds remaining in regulation was the game-winner as the Blind River Beavers upended the Espanola Express 3-2 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Blind River Community Centre.

The Beavers also opened the scoring on the night just over two minutes into the contest as Dylan McMahon notched his fourth goal of the season.

Espanola came back with the equalizer at 7:22 of the first with Cameron Anklewich collecting his second of the campaign to knot the affair at 1-1 after one.

Blind River regained the lead six and a half minutes into the middle compliments of Haiden Karnick.

Once again the Express countered with the tying tally as Nate Viberg scored for the ninth time this season as he found the back of the net at 19:39 of the frame.

Moving on to the third it remained tightly contested with the game looking like it was heading to overtime before Liarakos’ late heroics gave the home side the triumph.

Myles Hektor made 25 saves to record the win for the Beavers while Kyle Alaverdy faced 36 shots in a hard-luck defeat for Espanola.

With the decision, Blind River improved to 8-9-0-0 with Espanola slipping to 5-11-0-1.
