Canadians get by Express 5-3

ESPANOLA, Ont. – A Cayse Ton power play goal with 7:15 remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner as the Rayside-Balfour Canadians went on to defeat the Espanola Express 5-3 Friday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at the Regional Recreation Complex.

MacKenzie Aiken did give Espanola the early lead as he notched his seventh of the campaign at 5:47.

Rayside-Balfour drew level midway through the first as Chad Denault connected on the power play.

The Canadians then went in front 70 seconds later when Noah Serre finished off the work of Brett Whitehead and Ian Robbie.

Action in the second stanza saw the visitors go up 3-1 with four and a half minutes left in the frame thanks to Robbie.

The Express got that back with 40 seconds left in the period when Cameron Anklewich connected on the power play.

After Ton and Kris Hamlin put Rayside-Balfour up by three in the third, Espanola rounded out the scoring in the final moments during a late man advantage as Joshua Zlatinszky notched his first NOJHL goal.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Canadians by a 31-21 margin with Owen Johansson picking up the win and Taylor Unruh the loss.
