Crunch D-man Workun commits to Northland College of NCHA

COCHRANE, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce that defenceman Brandon Workun has committed to attended school at Northland College and play for the Lumberjacks program that competes out of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

The now 21-year-old Workun was acquired by the Crunch midway through this past season.

After battling through injuries the Calgary, Alta., product went on to play in 10 games for Cochrane on defence where he scored once and helped set-up four others in regular season play.

He also went on to compete in seven playoff contests where he chipped in with a goal and an assist.

“Our staff is very excited about bringing Brandon on board,” stated Northland head coach Seamus Gregory.

“This has been a process as we have been recruiting Brandon for quite some time,” added Gregory.

“Brandon plays a very hard game. He can shut down but can also chip in offensively when needed. He plays with a quiet confidence and an edge we need. He’s played a lot of junior hockey and it’s exciting to add a player that has the leadership qualities that he has to our young locker room. He was a little banged up this season, but fought through it and we expect him to chip in on our blue line right away,” added the Northland bench boss.

Workun will be joining three other Crunch alumni at Northland.

Former Cochrane players Max Glashauser, Henry Berger and Josh Racek already attend school there and skate for the Lumberjacks at the Ashland, Wis., based school.

Crunch netminder Brett Young will also head to Northland this fall as well.

“We are very familiar with the Crunch organization and Coach Ryan Leonard,” offered Gregory.

“He does a fantastic job in Cochrane. Anytime we can add a guy from his squad, we will. We love recruiting there and love the league.”
