Crunch improve to 12-2 in their past 14 with win over Rapids

COCHRANE, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch broke open a one-goal game with four unanswered markers in the second period, which included two thirds of a hat trick from Brandon Reynolds as they went on to defeat the French River Rapids 8-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday at Tim Horton Event Centre.

Starting to heat up heading towards the upcoming NOJHL playoffs, Cochrane has now gone 12-2 in their past 14 games.

In Sunday’s contest, French River did open the scoring 4:50 in on Christian Gaudreau’s 13th of the season.

Cochrane countered by tallying twice before the first period was complete on goals by McReynolds, who reached the 25-goal plateau while Braden King picked up his second of the campaign.

The Crunch then took control in the middle stanza on those four efforts, which were supplied by Nate Viberg, Nicolas Flanders, Shane Woolsey and McReynolds who picked up his second of night and 26th overall.

Action in the final frame saw Bailey Shaver add to the Cochrane cushion while McReynolds finished off his three-tally night with his 27th of the year at 7:31. He also had an assist for a four-point night.

The Rapids rounded out the scoring midway through the session with Robert Ranger picking up his first in league play.

Konnar Dechaine and Austin Whelan supplied three helpers apiece for the Crunch in the victory and Viberg chipped in with a pair.

Shots on net favoured Cochrane by a 65-18 margin.

Taylor Unruh started for the home side and picked up the win stopping 11 of 12 while Crunch affiliate netminder Jaden Chouinard handled five of six in just over 26 minutes of relief in his NOJHL debut.

Evan Peltier made 57 saves in a losing cause for French River.
