Eskimos edge Espanola 3-2

ESPANOLA – Erik Robichaud scored once and helped set-up the game-winner as the Abitibi Eskimos edged the Espanola Rivermen 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Each side found the back of the net once in the opening period with Robichaud opening the scoring at 15:26 while Alex Martin countered for the Rivermen 77 seconds later.

Abitibi’s Andrew Green put his side back on top four minutes into the middle session only to see Brennen Dubchak strike shorthanded midway through the stanza to level the proceedings once again while also extending a consecutive game point streak to 25 straight games in the process.

Zach Innes put the Eskimos back on top for good with the deciding goal, which came on the power play at 14:34 of the second.

Brody Wagner shut the door the rest of the way for Abitibi making 31 stops overall to register the win and put his side three points ahead of Espanola in the race for third spot in the standings. The Rivermen do however hold three games in hand.

William King saw 34 shots fired his way in a losing cause for the home side.

League play continues tonight at 7 p.m. when North Bay and Sudbury finish off a weekend home-and-home set at West Ferris Arena.
