Espanola’s Thompson commits to Davenport University of ACHA

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Espanola Express of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce that forward Ian Thompson has committed to attend Davenport University and play hockey with the Panthers’ program beginning in the 2016-17 season.

The 18-year-old Walker, Mich., product skated in 53 games for the Express this season scoring nine times and adding 14 assists for 23 points.

Before arriving in Espanola, Thompson was an All-State first team all-star who totalled 50 points in 25 outings for Kenowa Hills High School hockey team in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“Ian showed up at the rink everyday ready to play hockey and you couldn’t ask for a better person off the ice”, stated Express general manager Chad Clarke.

“Ian’s speed will be missed here in Espanola as most teams knew if he got a step on you he was gone as his quick take off and speed created a lot of odd man rushes,” added Espanola co-coach Jason Rapcewicz.

The Espanola Express family would like to wish Ian all the best as he advances his career to the next level. We know Ian will be successful academically and athletically at Davenport.

Based in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Davenport men’s hockey team finished this season ranked fourth nationally in the American Collegiate Hockey Association with a 33-3-2 record American Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Panthers won their league title playing out of the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League, which earned them a berth in the ACHA D-I national championships where they advanced all the way to the semifinals.
