Express win 3rd straight with triumph over Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Espanola Express netminder Shane Lippincott kicked out 68 of the amazing 71 shots he faced, including 31 in the second period alone, to backstop his club to a 6-3 victory over the Soo Eagles Wednesday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Pullar Stadium.

The Express opened the scoring midway through the first period thanks to Riley Smith’s second goal of the season.

Answering right back, Sault Ste. Marie notched the equalizer a couple shifts later with team captain Jake Saxton also scoring for a second time in the campaign.

Espanola regained the lead thanks to the power play as Aaron Roschinsky beat Eagles starter Justyn Gillis at 13:56.

Action in the middle stanza saw the visitors tack on two more, via special teams, to go up 4-1 after two with Nate Viberg striking shorthanded and Roschinsky, during a man advantage opportunity, both finding the back of the net.

The Express came out quickly to begin the third as they scored just six seconds into final frame compliments of MacKenzie Aiken.

Espanola’s third power play tally of the night made it 6-1 with Colton Sandboe extending the lead.

The Eagles did get two back, five minutes apart, later in the session to round out the scoring as William Casey and Brendan Schultz added markers to finish things off.

Patrick Smith dished out two assists to aid the Express cause while Chris Lutz had a pair of helpers for the Eagles.

Gillis faced 27 shots in defeat for the Soo.
