Herd highlights Powassan win over French River

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos got a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and an assist from Cade Herd to help his side cap off an unbeaten preseason (3-0) in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League after doubling up the French River Rapids 6-3 Friday afternoon at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Alex Paul staked the Rapids to the lead five and a half minutes into the contest before Harrison Israels put the Voodoos in flight with a power play tally at 6:51.

Rhys Brown then put the home team up 2-1 midway through the first frame.

Herd notched his opening marker of the day early in the second stanza to make it 3-1 Powassan after 40 minutes.

French River pulled to within one 2:52 into the third on a Jacob Romano effort only to see Herd and Matthew Hardwick connect for the Voodoos two and a half minutes apart to make it 5-2.

Gregory Trudeau-Paquet got one more for the Rapids midway through the third before Powassan’s Eric Nagy wrapped up the scoring on the afternoon in the latter stages of the contest.

Aaron Dickson dished out two assists for the winning side.

Josh Lund started in net for the Voodoos and saw just over 29 minutes of game action while stopping 13 of the 14 attempts he faced along the way.

Christian Cicigoi then entered in relief after that and picked up the victory handling 21 of the 23 attempts he saw.

Andrew Rocha faced 38 shots in defeat for French River.
