Nickel Barons edge Trappers in OT

SUDBURY – An August Jarecki goal 3:29 into overtime was the difference as Sudbury Nickel Barons edged the North Bay Trappers 4-3 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McClelland Arena.

The two sides scored one goal apiece in each of the three periods before Sudbury won it extra time.

Ryan Demyen opened the scoring for North Bay nine minutes into the first period only to see Sudbury’s Khadyn Butterfly level the proceedings with a man advantage marker at 12:45.

The middle stanza saw the Nickel Barons connect on the power play again midway through the session only to see Demyen strike again for the Trappers just over a minute later as he buried his league-leading sixth extra man effort to tie it at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Sudbury retook the lead early in the his third as Foschia scored at the 20-second mark beating North Bay netminder Dustin Hummel.

The Trappers then forced extra time with 12:12 remaining in regulation as Christian Sgroi’s attempt eluded Sudbury stopper Michael Muzyka.

The home side would then win it in OT as Jarecki redirected a point shot past Hummel for the game-winner.

Muzyka finished up making 30 saves to register the victory for the Nickel Barons, who improved to 5-10-0-2.

Hummel faced 35 shots in a losing cause, but helped them pick up a point in the standings as their record went to 6-10-0-4.
