NOJHL announces 3 Stars of the week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced its 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Jan. 26 and receiving recognition were forwards Samuel Wilbur of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners and Darcy Haines of the Soo Thunderbirds forward Darcy Haines along with Kirkland Lake goaltender Jeremy Pominville.
SAMUEL WILBUR, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – Taking to the ice twice last week Wilbur shone racking up seven points as the Gold Miners skated to victories over Sudbury and Espanola.
The 20-year-old Saginaw, Mich., product began by scoring once and doling out three assists, including setting up the game-winner, in a 6-4 road win against the Gold Miners Wednesday.
Two nights later Wilbur tacked one another three points by notching a goal and picking up a pair of helpers, as he once again assisted on the deciding goal, in a 4-2 third period come from behind victory over the Rivermen Friday.
He has amassed 14 points in his past four games to move into seventh spot overall in NOJHL scoring with 59 points, including 24 tallies.
DARCY HAINES, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – A one-game week earned Haines accolades after he scored the game-winner and tacked on three assists to help the Thunderbirds blank Elliot Lake 5-0 Saturday and run his club’s impressive winning streak to 19 consecutive games.
Since joining the Sault Ste. Marie roster back in early November, the 20-year-old from Val Caron, Ont., has averaged two points per game with 13 tallies and 27 assists in 20 contests.
His efforts also see him top all skaters in the NOJHL in point-per-game average a 2.00 and slide into a tie for 14th best in league offensive production.
JEREMY POMINVILLE, (G) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – In two starts last week the veteran netminder, who in his last season of Jr. A hockey, won both of them helping the Gold Miners solidify their hold on second place in the NOJHL standings while also staying within striking distance of league-leading Sault Ste. Marie.
Pominville began with a 31-save performance in a 6-4 victory vs. Sudbury this past Wednesday.
He then followed that up with another 21 stops in the come from behind triumph over Espanola Friday.
The 20-year-old Mattice, Ont., product has won his last three appearances and is currently second among all NOJHL goaltenders in shutouts with two in just 10 games played.
