NOJHL announces its Eastlink 3 Stars of the week
Blind River’s Hektor; Powassan’s McDonald & Mantz earn weekly accolades

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday goaltenders Myles Hektor of the Blind River Beavers and Nate McDonald of the Powassan Voodoos as well as Powassan forward Gary Mantz  have been named as its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending April 2.

MYLES HEKTOR, (G) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – In three starts last week, the 18-year-old native of Lake Bluff, Ill., was nearly unbeatable allowing just one goal against helping Blind River register a trio of all-important victories.

Hektor began with a 45-save shutout Tuesday in a narrow 1-0 triumph over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in the deciding Game 7of their West Division semifinal.

He then turned aside 58 of the 59 shots fired way Friday in a close 2-1 decision over the Soo Eagles in Game 1 of the West Division Final.

The Beavers’ netminder then capped his week Sunday by stopping all 24 attempts he saw in 3-0 win over the Eagles in Game 2 on home ice.

Hector currently leads the NOJHL in playoff shutouts with two and tops league netminders, among those who have seen 300 or more minutes of postseason action, in both goals-against average and save percentage at 1.52 and .964 respectively.

NATE MCDONALD, (G) POWASSAN VOODOOS – The NOJHL’s most valuable player remained unbeaten in the playoffs to date by adding two more triumphs to his win total of six backstopping Powassan to a pair of decisions over Timmins to begin the East Division Final.

The 17-year-old from nearby North Bay, Ont., started with a 24-save effort Friday as the Voodoos clipped the Rock 6-2.

McDonald then made 22 stops Saturday to register the first postseason shutout in Powassan history as they skated to a 3-0 victory in Game 2.

The Niagara University NCAA D-I commit is 6-0 so far in the playoffs with a 2.00 goals-against average along with a .926 save mark and the one shutout.

GARY MANTZ, (F) POWASSAN VOODOOS – Mantz totalled five points in the Voodoos opening two wins over Timmins to begin the best-of-seven set vs. the Rock.

The 19-year-old from Waterloo, Ont., opened the match-up against Timmins by picking up a goal and adding two assists in the Game 1 win Friday.

He then tallied twice, including notching the game-winner, Saturday as the Voodoos blanked the Rock.

With points in all six of Powassan’s playoff games to date, Mantz is currently fourth in NOJHL playoff scoring with 11 on six tallies and five helpers.
