NOJHL announces its first weekly 2017 playoffs Eastlink 3 Stars
Gold Miners’ Gerads; Eagles’ Phipps; Eskis’ Reuben earn the honours
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday its initial 2017 playoffs Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week with goaltenders Ridge Gerads of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners and Kade Phipps of the Soo Eagles along with Iroquois Falls Eskis forward Shadow Reuben being recognized.
RIDGE GERADS, (G) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – The 18-year-old native of Blaine, Minn., garnered the accolades for registering a combined goals-against average of 1.61 and a .948 save percentage through Kirkland Lake’s first two playoff games against Iroquois Falls.
Gerads’ NOJHL postseason debut was a memorable one as he stopped all 36 shots he faced to record his initial playoff shutout as the Gold Miners blanked the Eskis 4-0 in Game 1 of the East quarter-final.
He then made another 37 stops Sunday afternoon in his club’s 4-3 double overtime setback in Iroquois Falls.
KADE PHIPPS, (G) SOO EAGLES – Earning the start Friday against Elliot Lake in Game 1 of their West Division quarter-final, Phipps recorded the victory in his first league postseason contest by handling 26 of the 27 attempts he saw in the triumph over the Wildcats.
The 18-year-old Perrysburg, Ohio product then saved 36 of the 40 shots fired his way in the Eagles extra time defeat in Elliot Lake Saturday in Game 2 of their best-of-three affair.
Phipps enters the third and deciding game at home vs. the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Tuesday with a 2.40 average and a .925 save mark.
SHADOW REUBEN, (F) IROQUOIS FALLS ESKIS – Coming through in a big way with his club’s season on the line, Reuben’s efforts helped the Eskis send their best-of-three set against the Gold Miners back to Kirkland Lake for Tuesday’s finale at 7:30 p.m. at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
After he and his teammates were kept off the scoresheet in a Game 1 road setback, Reuben played a part in all four goals Iroquois Falls scored in a thrilling Game 2 victory Sunday.
The 18-year-old forward, who hails from Moosenee, Ont., tallied twice and assisted on two others, including the double OT winner for his fourth four-point game of the overall 2016-17 season.
Named a NOJHL second team CCM Hockey all-star, Reuben finished tied for second spot in league scoring with 78 points in 55 games, including 33 goals.
