NOJHL announces its weekly Eastlink 3 Stars
Wildcats’ Kostiw; Voodoos’ Murray; Thunderbirds’ McDonald garner weekly accolades

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Elliot Lake Wildcats goaltender Matt Kostiw, Powasaan Voodoos defenceman Dayton Murray and Soo Thunderbirds forward Kaidan McDonald  have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Feb. 26.

MATT KOSTIW, (G) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – Kostiw turned in solid three performances last week helping Elliot Lake pick-up four points in the league standings.

The 20-year-old netminder began by making 38 saves in a 4-3 overtime triumph over Blind River Friday.

He then entered in relief Saturday and held the high-flying Soo Thunderbirds to just two goals against on 26 attempts in a no decision at Sault Ste. Marie.

Kostiw then provided a 44-save effort Sunday as the Wildcats defeated their fellow division-rival Soo Eagles Sunday.

Finishing with a solid .938 save percentage for the week the Elliot Lake goalkeeper now sits seventh in the NOJHL in goals-against average at 3.16 and third in save percentage at .919.

DAYTON MURRAY, (D) POWASSAN VOODOOS – Having turned 20 earlier this month, Murray registered five points for the league-leading Voodoos last week helping them move to within a win of their first regular season title in franchise history.

The Voodoos rearguard started off by dishing out a pair of assists and also turned in a strong defensive game as Powassan blanked French River.

Hailing from Spruce Grove, Alta., Murray then notched the game-winning goal and provided set-ups for two other tallies in a win over Timmins.

Murray presently sits second among all NOJHL defenceman in offensive production with 46 points in 47 games.

His 16 goals lead all league blueliners and he’s third in assists with 30 and tops all D-men in game-winning goals with five.

He also has points in four straight and seven of his past eight.

KAIDAN MCDONALD, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – In two games last week the NOJHL rookie picked up points in both of them helping the Thunderbirds come away victorious in both of them to extended a team winning streak to eight and remain unbeaten in 12 with 11 wins and a tie.

The 18-year-old from Inuvik, Northwest Territories dished out an assist in a Sault Ste. Marie triumph over Espanola this past Wednesday.

McDonald then followed that up by doling out three helpers, including one on the game-winner, as the T-Birds blanked Elliot Lake.

On a modest three-game point streak, the Soo rookie now has 22 points in his first 47 league games on three goals and 19 assists.
