NOJHL names its Gongshow Gear players of the month for January

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Wednesday its respective Gongshow Gear Inc., player, defenceman, goaltender and rookie of the month for January.

GONGSHOW GEAR PLAYER OF THE MONTH – KYLE LIINIMAA, (F) RAYSIDE-BALFOUR CANADIANS: A solid start to 2017 saw the 18-year-old Sudbury native average close to two points per game in eight outings for Rayside-Balfour.

Liinimaa scored three times and doled out a dozen assists, including five multi-point contests for his club in January.

His offensive outburst also helped him move into the Canadians team lead in scoring with 40 points in 43 games on eight markers and 32 helpers.

GONGSHOW GEAR DEFENCEMAN OF THE MONTH – JOSH DEJULIO, (D) IROQUOIS FALLS ESKIS: Skating for his home town Eskis, the Iroquois Falls rearguard averaged just over a point-per-game during the month that was.

The 20-year-old Dejulio had one goal and eight assists for nine points for the Eskis in January.

Dejulio presently paces all NOJHL defencemen in offensive production so far this season with 38 points in 41 games having notched nine tallies while helping set-up 29 more, which also tops all league blueliners.

GONGSHOW GEAR GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH – TAYLOR UNRUH, (G) COCHRANE CRUNCH: After beginning the month with a setback against league-leading Powassan, Unruh reeled off five consecutive victories for the surging Crunch including helping hand the first place Voodoos their first home loss in over four months on Monday.

Having just turned 20 back on Jan. 8, the Regina, Sask. product posted a 2.33 goals-against average in the time frame along with a solid .920 save percentage helping Cochrane extend a winning streak to seven in succession.

Unruh also posted his first NOJHL shutout Jan. 27 with a 32-save performance at Kirkland Lake.

GONGSHOW GEAR ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – KYLE LIINIMAA (F) RAYSIDE-BALFOUR CANADIANS: Liinimaa rolled strong month into the top rookie award for January as well.

His 15 points in January paced all first-year skaters in the NOJHL who are 18 years of age or younger

Liinimaa’s solid run also helped him move all the way up to third in league rookie scoring with his 40 points.

Meanwhile his 32 assists lead all rookies in that department.
