Phipps posts 1st shutout as Eagles soar over Canadians

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – Bradley Hofelich and Brent Jones both tallied twice while Kade Phipps turned aside all 26 shots he faced to post his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League shutout as the Soo Eagles soared to a 7-0 victory over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians Sunday evening at Chelmsford Arena.

Chris Murphy got the Eagles going offensively as he notched his 19th of the season midway through the first.

Hofelich add to the Sault Ste. Marie lead just over five minutes later as they went up by a pair after one.

It was more Eagles in the middle stanza as they struck three times in span of five minutes and 25 seconds to chase Canadians starter Cameron Lamour.

Hofelich added his second of the night and 20th overall at 10:58 while Jones and William Casey added later efforts to make it 5-0.

Adam Ostrowski and Jones finished off the romp for the Soo in the third beating Owen Johansson in relief in the Rayside-Balfour net.

Brendan Schultz chipped in with three assists for the Eagles while Matt Meininger and Nick Trecroce dished out two helpers apiece.

The Soo outshot the Canadians 47-26 on the night.
