Powassan too much for French River

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos got a pair of goals and two assists from Jake Staples to help lead them to a 10-2 triumph over the French River Rapids Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Voodoos grabbed a 3-0 lead before the contest was 10 minutes old on tallies from Alexi Rivet, Staples and the eventual game-winner via Kyle Moore.

French River got one back at 16:37 of the first as Chris Atanas collected his seventh of the campaign.

Powassan replied before the frame expired with Tyler Peters reaching the 30-goal plateau on the season at 18:12.

The Voodoos added two more in the middle session off the sticks of Michael Silveri and Daniel Walker.

After Staples bagged his second of the night and 20th overall at 6:11 of the third, the Rapids’ Bret McInall countered just 26 seconds later to make it 7-2.

However, Powassan finished things off with three more thanks to Francois Lemelin, Nathaniel McLeod and Peters’ 31st of 2015-16 to wrap things up.

Garrett Forrest made 24 saves to record the win for the home side.

Zach Mills and Kyle Martelle both saw time between the pipes for French River in defeat and they faced a total of 47 shots in defeat for the Rapids.
