Quick start sends Powassan past French River

POWASSAN, Ont. –  A four-goal first period was more than enough for the Powassan Voodoos who went on to earn 6-2 triumph over the French River Rapids Monday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Dylan D’Agostino sent the Voodoos on their way five and a half minutes into the contest while Austin Ramirez added to the home side’s lead just 23 seconds later.

After Tyler Gervais-Rolfe made it 3-0 at 8:28, Andy Baker collected his league-leading 35th tally of the season on the next shift to put Powassan well in front and saw French River replace starter Even Peltier in favour of Korlan Vader the rest of the way.

Rhys Brown kept things going offensively for Powassan 35 seconds into the middle session while Shane Beaulieu’s first at 5:40 put the Voodoos up by a half dozen.

The Rapids got on the board at 14:14 of the session when Kornel Szabo notched his initial league tally.

Liam Fleming’s first NOJHL goal got one more for French River in the third to round out the night’s scoring.

Tyson Gilmour dished out three assists to aid Powassan’s offensive cause with teammate Brett Hahkala chipping in with two helpers along the way.

Nate McDonald made 20 stops to record the win for the Voodoos.

Peltier suffered the loss for the Rapids giving up four on 11 shots and Vader handled 30 of the 32 attempts he saw in nearly 51 minutes of relief.
