Rayside-Balfour’s Cayse Ton named NOJHL – RBC scholastic player of the year

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Thursday that Rayside-Balfour Canadians forward Cayse Ton has been named the NOJHL’s RBC scholastic player of the year for 2016-17.

With the honour the 17-year-old New Liskeard, Ont., product earns a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of RBC to help defer costs of his post-secondary education.

He is presently a Honour Roll Grade 12 student at St. Charles College in Sudbury.

Ton also becomes the NOJHL’s nominee for the Hockey Canada/Canadian Junior Hockey League RBC scholastic player of the year award, which will be announced during the 2017 RBC Cup Canadian Jr. A Championship this May in Cobourg, Ont.

That recipient will receive a $5,000 scholarship courtesy of RBC.

“We at the NOJHL would like to congratulate and commend Cayse for his tremendous efforts in the classroom as well as with the Rayside-Balfour Canadians,” stated Commissioner Robert Mazzuca.

“The scholastic efforts put forth by many of our student-athletes has contributed to the ever-growing list of those, who continue their studies at the collegiate and university levels either across Canada or the U.S.,” added Mazzuca.

On the ice Ton wrapped up the regular season fourth on the Canadians in team scoring with 43 points in 53 games played on 15 goals and 28 assists.

Through his first 110 NOJHL contests he’s amassed 81 points overall with 31 tallies and setting up 50 others along the way.

Ton and the rest of his Rayside-Balfour teammates continue their West Division semifinal series vs. the Blind River Beavers this evening at 8 p.m. at Chelmsford Arena.

Blind River currently leads that best-of-seven series 2-1.
