Storjohann shines as Kirkland Lake clips Espanola

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Alex Storjohann registered his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League hat trick and added an assist for his third four-point night of the season Saturday as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners clipped the Espanola Express 7-2 at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

After a scoreless first half of the opening period, Kirkland Lake proceeded to strike four times in just over a five-minute span to break it open.

Storjohann had the two of the tallies in the offensive outburst while Gunnar Wegleitner and Max Cavallini supplied singles.

Espanola got one back before the stanza was complete on Jason Bednarski’s 11th of the campaign at 18:25.

The Gold Miners fired 22 shots on target in the middle session, but could only beat Express netminder Logan Sawka once and that came as Storjohann secured his third of the night with just seven seconds remaining.

Connor Tessier added another for Espanola early in the third before Kirkland Lake got a pair of late markers from Tyler Fyfe and Lucas Dolanjski to round out the scoring.

Ashton Amaya had three assists for the Gold Miners.

Ridge Gerads made 36 saves to post the win for Kirkland Lake.

Sawka suffered the setback in net for the Express stopping 44 of the 50 shots he faced with Mitchel Jacobson handling five of six in seven and a half minutes of relief.
