Sudbury winning streak reaches double digits

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s leading scorer in Sebastien Leroux notched his 70th point of the season, scoring the game-winning goal 5:53 into the third period, to lift the Sudbury Nickel Barons to their 10th consecutive victory as they defeated the Soo Thunderbirds 3-1 Wednesday evening at McClelland Arena.

The lone goal of the opening period came late in the stanza as the Thunderbirds’ Dallas McLaughlin notched his eighth of the season beating Sudbury starter Alex Laino at 18:17.

Special teams allowed the Nickel Barons to pull level before the end of the middle frame with Giovanni Foschia converting on the power play against Joel Hordziejczyk with 3:20 to go in the session.

That set the stage for Leroux to bury the winner before Darcy Haines iced it with his league-leading 31st tally of the season, scoring into the empty net with 16 seconds remaining to round out the scoring.

Leroux and Haines also extended consecutive game point streaks to 10 on the night as well.

The win for the Nickel Barons gives them the second longest win current streak in the Canadian Jr. Hockey League.

Only the Summerside Western Capitals have won more in a row as the Maritime Hockey League club and 2013 Royal Bank Cup host have 12 triumphs in succession heading into their next contest Thursday evening vs. the Dieppe Commandos.

Laino was stellar turning in a 47-save performance to secure the victory helping his side improve to 23-11 overall.

Hordziejczyk was equally as solid for the T-Birds in a losing cause, finishing with 33 stops on the night.

Sault Ste. Marie fell to 23-6-3-3 with the setback.

NOJHL play resumes Friday as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners host the Elliot Lake Bobcats with the opening face-off set for 7:30 p.m.
