Sudbury shuts out North Bay 1-0

NORTH BAY – Ryan Punkari’s tally at 17:15 of the first period proved to be the only goal of the night as the Sudbury Nickel Barons defeated the North Bay Trappers 1-0 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday evening at West Ferris Arena.

Mike Muzyka turned aside all 20 shots he faced to record his first NOJHL shutout in regular season play for the Nickel Barons.

Ironically this was the first blanking posted by Sudbury since Feb. 2, 2013 when Alexander Laino made 30 stops in a 4-0 shutout at Abitibi.

North Bay fell despite the heroics of netminder Evan Cormier who finished with an impressive 55 saves in the contest in the hard-luck setback

The game-winner was Punkari’s second of the season and 12th overall marker of the 2013-14 campaign as he finished off the work of Dylan Callaghan and Kurtis Clouthier.

The triumph also moved the Nickel Barons three points ahead of the Trappers in the race for sixth spot in the league standings.

NOJHL action resumes Wednesday on three fronts as Sault Ste. Marie takes on Elliot Lake in a contest to be staged at Rankin Arena at 7 p.m., while Espanola visits Sudbury and Kirkland Lake entertains Abitibi in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
