Thunderbirds’ Boman commits to NCAA D-I Niagara Purple Eagles

By Matt Stefano

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — The Soo Thunderbirds announced on Sunday that second-year defenceman Caleb Boman has committed to attend Niagara University in New York State to play in NCAA Division I hockey on scholarship for the Purple Eagles.

“We are extremely proud of Caleb and happy for him and his family today with his commitment to play at Niagara University,” said T-Birds general manager Jamie Henderson. “Caleb has come a long way the last year and a half and really committed himself this past Summer to becoming a top player in our league.”

Boman, who suited up for Team NOJHL this month at the Eastern Canada Junior A Challenge in Cornwall, Ont., has also been named to Team Canada’s East Selection Camp roster for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge.

“I chose Niagara because they made it really welcoming,” said Boman. “I looked at the programs to take and they have a lot of interesting options.”

Through 71 career games thus far for the T-Birds, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., product has produced 15 goals and 57 points.

This season he currently sits second in scoring among NOJHL defencemen with 25 points on six goals and 19 assists.

“Outside of school, the hockey aspect looks like a great atmosphere and should be a great four years with the Purple Eagles,” continued Boman. “I think my development as a player has come a long way. In season and out I continued to work hard. My coaching staff has pushed me and made me the player I am today, they gave me the confidence to be the best I can.”

Boman, who led all T-Bird defencemen in goals and points last season, has been one of the top blueliners this year in the NOJHL.

“My family and I are really excited,” concluded Boman. “My parents are really proud of me and are excited for my future with the Purple Eagles.”

Boman follows former T-Birds Owen Headrick (Lake Superior State University) and David Radke (Colorado College), who both committed to NCAA Division I programs from the 2014-2015 team that went on to be crowned NOJHL league champions as well as Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada winners.
