Thunderbirds’ Grandinetti named NOJHL – RBC scholastic player of the year

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Soo Thunderbirds defenceman Brandon Grandinetti has been named the NOJHL’s RBC scholastic player of the year.

With the honour for the 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., product earns a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of RBC to help defer costs of his post-secondary education.

Grandinetti also becomes the NOJHL’s nominee for the Hockey Canada/Canadian Junior Hockey League RBC scholastic player of the year award, which will be announced during next month’s RBC Cup in Lloydminster, Alta.

That recipient will receive a $5,000 scholarship courtesy of RBC.

Grandinetti is currently a second-year Biology student at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie and was earlier named the Thunderbirds academic player of the year.

“We commend Brandon for his tremendous efforts in the classroom as well as with the Thunderbirds in what has been another fantastic season for the club,” said NOJHL Commissioner Robert Mazzuca.

It goes without saying the commitment of all our student-athletes has not gone unnoticed with many of our players continuing on with their studies at the college and university level both across Canada and the U.S.,” added Mazzuca.

On the ice Grandinetti picked up six points and bolstered the Soo’s defensive corps in the playoffs helping the Thunderbirds capture their second consecutive NOJHL championship.

He also picked up 24 points in 51 regular season contests.
