Thunderbirds top Voodoos 3-1

POWASSAN, Ont. – A match-up between the top two teams in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League standings Saturday saw the Soo Thunderbirds prevail with a 3-1 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Camaryn Baber staked the visitors to the night’s opening tally six and a half minutes in as the Soo Ste. Marie rookie picked up his eighth of the campaign.

After a scoreless middle frame, the Thunderbirds added to their lead 4:28 into the third thanks to a Lucas Theriault effort.

Powassan would cut into the deficit midway through the final frame as Brandon MacKinnon connected for the Voodoos.

However, the Soo came right back just 28 seconds later to get that back as Baber supplied his second of the evening to round out the scoring.

Thunderbirds’ netminder Brandon Gordon did the rest finishing with 37 saves to record the win.

Julian Galloway faced 35 attempts in defeat for Powassan.

With the result, The Soo improves to 25-8-2-1 while the league-leading Voodoos slipped to 28-4-1-2.
