Timmins strikes late to edge Iroquois Falls

TIMMINS, Ont. – A Bain Cunningham power play goal with 1:38 remaining was part of a three-tally third period as the Timmins Rock came back to defeat the Iroquois Falls Eskis 3-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday night at McIntyre Arena.

Each side would get 14 shots in the first frame, but it was scoreless thanks to the efforts of goaltenders in the Eskis Artem Bortovskiy and Al Rogers of the Rock.

Iroquois Falls would break the deadlock late in the second stanza when Wade Auger connected at 17:47.

Timmins drew level near the six-minute mark of the third compliments of Tyler Romain.

Then up a man late in regulation, Cunningham collected his first game-winner of the season with a second left in a man advantage opportunity.

Cory Sprague supplied some insurance in the final minute as he scored into an empty net at 19:33 to round out the scoring.

Rogers finished with 43 saves to record the win for the Rock while Bortovskiy stopped 39 of 41 in a tough defeat for the Eskis.
