Voodoos drop Gold Miners 5-1

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos got a goal and an assist apiece from Kyle Challis and Tyler Gervais-Rolfe helping them drop the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-1 Sunday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League East Division match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Kirkland Lake did get on the board first in the contest as Stavros Soilis notched his seventh of the season 4:22 in.

Powassan struck late in the opening frame to knot the affair at 1-1 when Parker Bowman picked up his fourth overall in the final minute of the session.

The Voodoos then went in front 45 seconds into the middle stanza as Brett Hahkala made it a 2-1 game early in the period.

Challis then supplied one for the hosts at 15:22 as he notched his fourth overall on a set-up from Ryan Bazzana and Gary Mantz during a man advantage opportunity.

Powassan kept coming and got another going up 4-1 through two as Tyson Gilmour notched his third as a member of the Voodoos in the final minute.

The hosts continued their run of scoring early and late as Gervais-Rolfe extended the home side’s lead 60 seconds into the final frame to round out the scoring.

Mantz had two helpers for the winners as he extended a consecutive game point streak to eight in the process.

Nicholas Campbell made 19 saves to register the win for Powassan while Victor-Olivier Courchesne faced 41 shots in defeat for the Gold Miners.

With the victory the Voodoos improved to 9-3-1-0 on the year while Kirkland Lake fell to 5-7-1-1 overall.
