Voodoos top Crunch in battle of NOJHL unbeatens

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos are now the lone unbeaten club in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League after handing the Cochrane Crunch their first loss of the season, skating to a 4-2 victory Monday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

It was the Voodoos who got things going offensively as Steve Harland notched the lone goal of the opening period with his fourth of the campaign at 7:28.

A special teams tally allowed Powassan to increase their cushion late in the middle stanza when Eric Champagne connected on the power play at 17:56.

Nathaniel McLeod made it 3-0 for the home side early in the third as he added a man advantage effort in what was the eventual game-winner.

Battling back, Cochrane got one back via the power play five and half minutes into the final frame with Hunter Atchison getting the visitors on the board.

The Crunch kept coming and moved to within one with 3:34 remaining as Seamus Maguire finished off the work of Hunter Atchison and Joseph Thielen.

However, Harland’s second of the night with 65 seconds to go added some insurance helping the Voodoos improve to 6-0 overall.

The defeat saw Cochrane slip to 6-1 in the standings.

Michael Silveri dished out three assists to aid the Voodoos offensive cause while Nicky Grose had two helpers.

Garrett Forrest made 31 saves to record the victory for Powassan with Brett Young facing 34 shots in defeat.
