Winters wonderful as Gold Miners blank Wildcats at Showcase

SUDBURY, Ont. – Kirkland Lake Gold Miners’ netminder Ryan Winter stood tall stopping all 36 shots he faced to backstop his side to a 5-0 victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Wednesday afternoon in Day 2 play at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase Wednesday Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex in Sudbury.

The contest was scoreless past the 15-minute mark of the opening frame when Kirkland Lake connected during a two-man advantage on a William Mizuik effort at 15:33.

Still on the power play Zach Bannister’s fourth of the season upped the lead to 2-0 after one.

Heading into the middle session, the Gold Miners tacked on two more thanks to Tyler Fyfe and Sam Ellwood, with his first.

They then capped off the triumph with a third period marker from Gabriel Rheault midway through the stanza to round out the scoring.

Allan Menary faced 34 shots in defeat for the Wildcats.

CCM Hockey player of the game awards went to Garrett Giertuga of Kirkland Lake and Logan Freiburger of Elliot Lake.
