2 for Butterfly as Sudbury remains unbeaten

COCHRANE – Khadyn Butterfly’s second goal on the night with 10:58 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Sudbury Nickel Barons slipped past the Cochrane Crunch 2-1 Thursday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Cochrane grabbed a 1-0 lead after one period of play courtesy of a Dustin Cordeiro effort just over three minutes after the opening face-off.

Butterfly pulled the Nickel Barons even with a man advantage marker midway through the second stanza.

The Sudbury captain then buried the difference maker in the final frame as he notched his second power play tally of the night to secure the victory.

Kevin Labelle stopped 43 of 44 attempts he saw to help the Nickel Barons improve to 3-0 early in the season.

Troy Paquette had 28 saves in a losing cause for the Crunch who suffered their first loss of the campaign as the slipped to 2-1 overall.

NOJHL play resumes Friday on three fronts as Cochrane visits Powassan for the Voodoos home opener while Mattawa visits Elliot Lake in the Wildcats initial contest at Centennial Arena and Sudbury travels to Kirkland Lake.

All three match-ups get underway at 7:30 p.m.
