23 in a row for T-Birds
SAULT STE. MARIE – Make it 23 victories in succession for the No. 1 ranked team in all of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Soo Thunderbirds.
The front runners of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League extended their winning ways Wednesday as the Thunderbirds defeated the Elliot Lake Bobcats 5-1 at Rankin Arena.
Gavin Burbach had a pair of goals and an assist for the winners while Darcy Haines tallied once and set-up two others.
Burbach had the lone effort of the opening period as he extended a consecutive game goal streak to nine in succession.
The T-Birds ran their cushion to 3-0 after minutes on markers by Riley Bordin and Burbach’s second of the night.
Nicolas Tassone and Haines put Sault Ste. Marie up by five in the final frame before Dustin Cordeiro snapped Joel Horodziejczyk’s shutout bid at 6:42.
Shots on goal favoured the Thunderbirds by a 40-29 count with Horodziejczyk coming away victorious in his 23rd straight start.
