3 for Mantz as Voodoos drop Eskis

POWASSAN, Ont. – Gary Mantz scored three times to help power the Powassan Voodoos past the Iroquois Falls Eskis 4-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at the Powassan Sportsplex.

With the hat trick Mantz extended a current NOJHL-high point streak to 13 in succession while the Voodoos won for a seventh straight outing.

A Powassan power play allowed them to notch the lone marker of the opening 20 minutes as Mantz connected 7:11 into the contest.

He then added another man advantage effort with 6:33 left in the middle session to put the home side up 2-0 after two.

Brett Hahkala made it 3-0 just 39 seconds into the third before Iroquois Falls rallied with tallies from Shadow Reuben and David Osborne to pull within one with four and half minutes to go.

The Eskis then pulled their goaltender, Trevor Hawkes, late in an attempt to tie things up, but Mantz iced it with an empty netter with four second left to finish things off.

Nicholas Campbell made 23 saves to record the win for the Voodoos while Hawkes was peppered with 50 shots in defeat for Iroquois Falls.
