3rd period outburst leads Canadians over Express

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Rayside-Balfour Canadians struck for five unanswered third period goals to surprise the Espanola Express 5-1 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Regional Recreation Complex.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Espanola collected the lone marker in the middle stanza compliments of Jeb Paulson with 12:26 left in the session.

It took the Canadians 59 seconds to knot the affair at 1-1 early in the third as Ian Robbie levelled the proceedings.

Danny Lepage then notched the eventual game-winner at 3:39 as the visitors went up 2-1.

Rayside-Balfour kept coming with Robbie striking twice more to finish off a hat trick five minutes apart making it 4-1.

Chad Denault then capped off the night’s scoring late with his fourth overall.

MacKenzie Savard turned in another strong performance in net for the Canadians making 47 saves in earning the victory.

Logan Sawka suffered the setback for the Express allowing three on 34 attempts while Shane Lippincott gave up two on five shots in 10 minutes of third period relief.
