7 straight for Sault Ste. Marie
BLIND RIVER – A three-goal second and third period helped lift the Soo Thunderbirds to their seventh consecutive victory, a 6-1 decision over the Blind River Beavers, Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Blind River Community Centre.
The home side got off to a good start in this one grabbing a 1-0 lead through the opening stanza thanks to Beavers’ defenceman Alex Cyrenne’s first marker of the season at 14:58.
It was all Sault Ste. Marie in the middle session however as they struck three times to go up a pair heading into the final frame.
Nicolas Tassone tied it at 3:16 while his team was down a man before Joey Miller put the Thunderbirds in front for good three and a half minutes later.
Jaren Bellini then added one of his own in the latter stages of the second to make it a 3-1 game.
The T-Birds added some third period insurance off the stick of Travis Campbell at 3:18 to extend the visitors cushion before Izaak Del Mastro and Nicolas Sicoly finished things off offensively for the Soo.
Matt Caruso and David Radke both chipped in with a pair of assists apiece to aid the cause of the winners.
Shots on goal favoured the Thunderbirds 48-25 with Mario Culina picking up the victory.
Zach Mills started for Blind River, but gave way to Nick Kazmierczak early after making six consecutive saves.
Kazmierczak stopped 35 on 41 attempts in relief and suffered the loss.
