Big 3rd period sends Powassan past Rayside-Balfour

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos broke open a tie game with five third period tallies to power past the Rayside-Balfour Canadians by a 6-1 count in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Chelmsford Arena.

It was a tight-checking opening frame with neither side managing to score.

Powassan netted the lone marker in the middle session with Aaron Dart picking one up at 5:58.

The Canadians drew level 1:21 into the third as Otis Goldman connected on an early man advantage opportunity.

Michael Silveri supplied the eventual game-winner for the Voodoos at 5:14 before Nathanial McLeod’s 14th of the season two and a half minutes later added to the visitors cushion.

Powassan kept coming thanks to the power play and Nicky Grose at 14:39.

Pulling their goaltender early on in an effort to get back into it, the Canadians surrendered an empty netter at 15:50 to the Voodoos’ Daniel Walker while Francois Lemelin capped off the outburst for Powassan with 80 seconds to go.

Jake Staples dished out two assists in the triumph for his squad.

Garrett Forrest made 38 saves to post the win for the Voodoos.

MacKenzie Savard faced 51 shots in defeat for Rayside-Balfour.
