Blackhawks score late to edge Beavers

BLIND RIVER – C.J. Nicholson’s goal with under five minutes remaining proved to be the difference as the Mattawa Blackhawks edged the Blind River Beavers 6-5 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Blind River Community Centre.

Each side would strike twice in the opening 20 minutes with Andy Williams and Reed Gregory giving Mattawa an early 2-0 lead before Blind River replied with markers from Chris Hrabec and Trent Linklater to level the proceedings.

The visitors then made it a 5-3 game after two periods of play thanks to a pair of Brett Outerkirk tallies before he set-up Nicholson with 6:55 to go in the session.

Scoring for the Beavers in the frame Nathan Johnson.

Blind River continued to press in the third with Johnson and Austin Lamont finding the back of the net 57 seconds apart to level the proceedings at 5-5.

However Nicholson’s second of the evening with 4:47 left in regulation was the game-winner as the Blackhawks held on from there to pull out the narrow victory.

Philip Cloutier dished out three assists for Mattawa while Hrabec had a pair of helpers for the Beavers.

Shots on goal favoured Mattawa 36-22 with Josh Horner picking up the win and Daniel Potter the defeat.
