Bobcats go up 3-2 on Eskimos

IROQUOIS FALLS – Max Glashauser scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with 5:14 remaining as the Elliot Lake Bobcats edged the Abitibi Eskimos 5-4 Sunday evening in game 5 of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League quarter-final series at Jus Jordan Arena.

With the victory the Bobcats now lead the best-of-seven affair 3-2 heading into game 6 Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.

Both teams came out firing in the opening 20 minutes with Abitibi grabbing a 3-2 lead through one period of play.

Erik Robichaud began the scoring just 10 seconds after the opening face-off to give the Eskimos the early lead only to see Aaron Carmichael tie it for the visitors just over a minute later.

Abitibi went back on top at 6:18 of the session thanks to Brady Clouthier, but Elliot Lake answered back once again midway through the frame as Mike Gambino connected on the power play.

The Eskimos then took their third lead of the night with just over five minutes left in the first as Robichaud buried his second of the game.

The Bobcats levelled the proceedings once again by banging home the only tally of the second period, which came off the stick of Dustin Cordeiro at 7:59.

Entering the third Abitibi went back into the lead at 6:40 when Zach Innes made it a 4-3 game putting the Eskimos back in front for a fourth time.

Once again however Elliot Lake countered as Carmichael slammed home his second of the contest with 11:33 to go.

That set the stage for Glashauser’s winner as the Bobcats grabbed their first lead of the evening and held on from there to pull out the victory and take the series lead heading home with a chance to wrap-up it up with a win in Elliot Lake Monday.

Brett Wagner had a pair of assists for the winners on the night.

Alex Bitsakis faced 30 shots in securing the triumph for the Bobcats.

Sylvain Miron saw 32 attempts fired his way in defeat.
