Bobcats rally to upend Nickel Barons in OT

SUDBURY –  An Aaron Carmichael goal 3:36 into overtime lifted the Elliot Lake Bobcats to a 4-3 come from behind victory over the Sudbury Nickel Barons in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Wednesday evening at McClelland Arena.

After a scoreless first 10 minutes of the opening period Sudbury struck three times before the session was complete on an even strength effort from Jacob Punkari along with power play tallies courtesy of Khadyn Butterfly and Brody Brunet.

Butterfly also assisted on Brunet’s effort to extend a season-high point streak to seven games with his offensive output.

Special teams allowed Elliot Lake to get back into the contest in the middle frame as Aviv Milner notched a pair of man advantage markers 76 seconds apart.

The Bobcats then forced extra time with 8:17 remaining in regulation as Brett Wagner buried his league-leading 20th tally of the season past Nickel Barons netminder Andrew Lefebvre.

That set the stage for Elliot Lake to complete the comeback as they carried the play in the extra session and were rewarded with Carmichael’s game-winner in OT.

Alex Bitsakis faced 44 attempts in the win for the Bobcats who improved to 12-8-0-3 overall.

Andrew Lefebvre made 47 stops for the Nickel Barons in the setback as Sudbury slipped to 6-13-0-4 on the season.

NOJHL play resumes Friday on two fronts as the Bobcats are at home to host the Abitibi Eskimos while the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners travel to Espanola to tangle with the Rivermen in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
