Brick looks to build Beavers in role as Blind River’s new head coach
BLIND RIVER, Ont. – The Blind River Beavers of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League will have to wait just awhile longer for their new head coach to arrive.
Recently hired bench boss Kyle Brick is still fulfilling his duties with the two-time NOJHL champion Soo Thunderbirds as they get set to defend the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A title they won a year ago in Fort Frances, Ont.
This year’s event goes May 3-7 in Kirkland Lake and will feature the Thunderbirds taking on the host Gold Miners along with the Trenton Golden Hawks and the Fort Frances Lakers, the champions of the OJHL and SIJHL respectively.
With the Dudley-Hewitt Cup still at hand, Brick is also looking forward to rebuilding things on the ice in Blind River.
“First off I’m excited to become part of the Beavers organization,” offered the team’s new bench boss.
“This is a great opportunity for me and I am looking forward to the challenge.”
In two seasons with the Thunderbirds, Brick has been part of impressive accomplishments made by the NOJHL powerhouse.
He’ll look to bring some of that same intensity to his new role with the Beavers.
“I’m going to bring a fresh look with a positive attitude,” says Brick.
“I want to create an environment where the players know that they are allowed to learn, allowed to develop and allowed to maximize their potential.”
While he’ll be entering a new organization the newly minted Blind River coach will carry over one simple philosophy.
“The only expectation I have is that the players will be required to compete every shift. I believe that if the players are not going to put it on the line every shift then you’re not going to win.”
Brick will also look to add what he has learned working in the successful Soo program that has flourished under their staff and T-Birds head coach Jordan Smith.
“I can’t say enough about what I learned under Jordan and the Thunderbird organization” surmised Brick.
“There is a reason why we were successful and it comes with leadership and Jordan is a great leader. I am thankful for the opportunity Jordan and the Thunderbirds gave me and I wish them all the best.”
Once the Thunderbirds season comes to a close, the Thessalon, Ont., product will begin his full-time efforts with Blind River where he will work alongside freshly named general manager Dennis Lawrence in returning the Beavers to a successful NOJHL franchise both on and off the ice.
