Canadians’ Savard; Gold Miners’ Fyfe; Thunderbirds’ Gordon named Eastlink 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that goaltenders MacKenzie Savard of the Rayside-Balfour Canadians and Brandon Gordon of the Soo Thunderbirds as well as Kirkland Lake Gold Miners’ forward Tyler Fyfe have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Oct. 15.

MACKENZIE SAVARD, (G) RAYSIDE-BALFOUR CANADIANS – Helping backstop the Canadians to their current four-game winning streak has been netminder Savard.

Earning three decisions alone last week, the 20-year-old from Dowling, Ont., has now come away victorious in his last eight starts.

Starting with a 32-save shutout over Timmins at the NOJHL Showcase, Savard then went on to defeat both Espanola and the Soo Eagles in further league play.

In all he posted a 1.00 goals-against average for the week and a .969 save percentage.

Savard presently leads all league goaltenders in wins (8) and save percentage (.951) and is second in average (1.78).

In his current eight-game winning streak he has only allowed 11 goals against in that span helping Rayside-Balfour move into second spot in the NOJHL West Division.

TYLER FYFE, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – In four games last week, the 20-year-old Cloverdale, B.C. product scored in each of the them and averaged two points-per-game helping the Gold Miners pick-up five of a possible eight points in the league standings.

Fyfe began with a pair of goals in a double overtime setback vs. the Soo Eagles at the NOJHL Showcase in Sudbury Tuesday.

The following day he tallied again and assisted on the game-winner as Kirkland Lake blanked Elliot Lake in Day 2 at the Showcase.

Saturday saw him tally twice more and once again set-up the difference maker as his side slipped past French River on home ice.

He then capped off his week with a marker in a setback at Hearst Sunday evening.

Currently riding a seven-game point streak, Fyfe tops the Gold Miners in offensive production with 17 points in 14 games, including 10 goals.

He is tied for fourth overall with his tally total and is knotted for ninth in league scoring.

BRANDON GORDON, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Making the most of his two starts last week, Gordon stopped 52 of the 55 shots in a pair of victories for the Thunderbirds.

The 20-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., posted wins over Hearst and Blind River helping his side up their league-leading point total to 25 and extend a club winning streak to six.
