Cochrane’s Johnson & Herbster; Soo Thunderbirds’ Tassone named NOJHL’s 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Levi Johnson and Kyle Herbster of the Cochrane Crunch as well as Mark Tassone of the Soo Thunderbirds have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25.

LEVI JOHNSON, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – In three outings last week the 20-year-old Vernon, B.C., product amassed 11 points in total helping Cochrane skate to a trio of victories.

Johnson had goals in all three triumphs, including his notching his first NOJHL hat trick on Saturday as the Crunch rocked Timmins.

In 17 contests since joining the club in January from the Drayton Valley Thunder (AJHL) he is over a point-per-game player with 22 on a dozen tallies and 10 assists.

KYLE HERBSTER, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – Herbster too had a productive week for Cochrane as he joined Johnson with 11 points in those three Crunch victories.

The 19-year-old from Cary, Ill., picked up four goals and seven helpers in the time frame helping him extend a point streak to five in succession.

Having a tremendous season, Herbster enters play this week sitting second in league scoring with 82 points on a career single-campaign high 36 markers and 46 assists.

Of note, his eight shorthanded goals lead the NOJHL.

MARK TASSONE, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Tassone’s efforts during the week that was saw him produce seven points as the Thunderbirds earned three straight wins to move back into first place in the highly-competitive NOJHL’s West Disivion.

Included in the 19-year-old Sault Ste. Marie., Ont., product’s run was a four-point night Friday as the Soo topped Blind River on home ice.

Among his efforts last week, Tassone reached the 100-point plateau in his NOJHL career while also notching his 50th tally in league play. He now boasts 102 points in 131 outings on 50 goals and 52 assists.

His 19 markers in 2017-18 is a career single-season high.
