Cordeiro’s pair leads Crunch over Blackhawks

MATTAWA – Dustin Cordeiro tallied twice for a third consecutive game to help the Cochrane Crunch defeat the Mattawa Blackhawks 5-2 Saturday in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Saturday at Mike Rodden Arena.

There was plenty of offensive production in the opening 20 minutes with the Crunch grabbing a 3-2 cushion heading into the middle frame.

Cordeiro and Marco Luciani, just over a minute apart, scored to put Cochrane up a pair before Andy Williams got Mattawa on the board with 6:05 remaining in the session on a power play marker.

Henry Yawit tied it for the Blackhawks at 16:49 only to see Ryan Gruzska notch the eventual game-winner with a minute and 25 seconds left in the first.

After a scoreless middle stanza, the Crunch put the game away with a couple of quick strikes early in the third off the sticks of Cody Gratton and Cordeiro to round out the scoring.

Aaron Carmichael and Joey Mavrin both added two assists to aid the Crunch attack.

Shots on goal favoured the winners 46-40 with Matt Young improving to 5-0 on the season with his team raising their record to 8-2 overall while extending a team winning streak to four.

Joe Sheppard was saddled with the loss for Mattawa, who despite remaining competitive on most nights, remain winless on the campaign at 0-10.
