Crunch newcomer tallies twice in NOJHL debut in win over Beavers

COCHRANE, Ont. – Brenden Van Sweden scored twice in his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League debut Friday night helping propel the Cochrane Crunch to an 8-2 triumph over the Blind River Beavers at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Cochrane went up 3-0 before the contest was 10 minutes old on tallies by Joe Thielen, Kaden Hintz and Van Sweden, who notched the eventual game-winning goal.

Blind River got one back midway through the first thanks to Cole Murray and added another from Tyler Somers via the power play with 1:47 left in the session.

The Crunch came back however and went up 4-2 just 35 seconds later on Jeremy McNeil’s 10th of the season.

Cochrane high-powered offense kept coming in the middle session as they tacked on three more markers from Aviv Milner, Van Sweden and Jon Marzec to go up 7-2 after 40 minutes.

Dustin Cordeiro then wrapped up the night’s scoring with a shorthanded effort in the third for his 31st goal of the season.

Marzec and Taylor Armbruster dished out three assists each for the Crunch while Cordeiro, Milner and Evan Akkerman supplied two helpers.

Allan Menary made 34 saves to post the win for Cochrane with Matt Blattenberger seeing 55 shots fired his way in defeat for the Beavers.
