Culina and Thunderbirds blank Eagles
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Mario Culina’s return to the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League was about as good as it gets Saturday as he stopped all 24 shots he faced to shutout the rival Soo Eagles 4-0 at Pullar Stadium.
The Thunderbirds got the only goal they would require on this night 15:07 into the opening period as Drake Pilon fed his twin brother Darian for his ninth marker of the season.
Drake Pilon then made it 2-0 T-Birds two minutes into the middle frame as they went up a pair.
Jake Behse’s second of the campaign put the visitors up by three at 3:08 before they finished off the night’s scoring compliments of Matthew Busby’s sixth at 11:40.
Culina did the rest in posting the shutout in his first start since rejoining the club from Windsor of the OHL.
Jack Deines started for the Eagles and suffered the loss facing 19 shots before being replaced by Jack Hickey after the fourth Thunderbirds goal.
Hickey made 12 saves in relief.
