Eagles clip Thunderbirds in OT

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Chris Murphy’s 14th goal of the season, coming 4:23 in overtime, was the game-winner as the Soo Eagles edged the rival Soo Thunderbirds 3-2 Friday night in front of 854 fans in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at Pullar Stadium.

The Eagles got on the board first notching the night’s opening tally 10:41 in thanks to a Landon Hubbard effort.

Heading into the second stanza, it was the visiting Thunderbirds that picked up the lone marker of the session when Keegan Stevenson scored at 1:55.

The Eagles regained the lead near the seven-minute mark of the third when Jacob Palmerio supplied his eighth of the campaign.

Battling back late, the T-Birds forced extra time with 44 seconds left in regulation on Matthew Caruso’s tying tally.

Skating four aside in the initial OT, it was Murphy who gave the home side the second point on the night as he ended it in dramatic fashion.

William Casey had two assists for the Eagles to aid their offensive cause.

Kade Phipps made 31 saves to earn the victory while Dougie Newhouse faced 34 attempts in defeat for the Thunderbirds.
