Eagles defeat No. 1 ranked Thunderbirds 2-1

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A Bradley Hofelich goal 3:38 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Soo Eagles skated past the rival Soo Thunderbirds 2-1 Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Pullar Stadium.

It was a scoreless opening 20 minutes with neither side managing to get on the board.

Roman Gaudet got the Eagles going with the lone marker in the second as he collected his 10th of the season at 4:27 during a man advantage opportunity.

Hofelich extended the cushion for the home side in the third as they went up by two with 16:22 to play.

The NOJHL-leading and No. 1 Canadian Junior Hockey League-ranked Thunderbirds got one back off the stick of Khadyn Butterfly at 5:19, but that’s as close as they would get as the low-scoring affair came to a close.

Cam Bruggrabe made 35 saves to earn the win for the Eagles who defeated the T-Birds for the first time in regular season play in 2015-16.

Brendon Gordon saw 28 shots fired his way in defeat for the Thunderbirds.
