SUDBURY, Ont. – A couple of Cooper Fredericks tallies, including the eventual game-winner, lifted the Soo Eagles to a narrow 3-2 triumph over the Iroquois Falls Storm Tuesday afternoon at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Taking flight just 29 seconds into the proceedings, the Eagles clicked on an early power play when Liam Watson slid a pass into the left circle where a waiting Fredericks wired a shot past Iroquois Falls netminder Justin Sullivan.

Iroquois Falls came back to tie it a couple of minutes into the middle stanza as Ben Sherwin was left with an open net to score on after Sault Ste. Marie goaltender Jace Knoerle could not contain a loose puck.

Retaking the lead nearly five minutes into the third period, the Soo’s Luke Russell roofed a shot through a partial screen from the right side boards.

Some late pressure generated another effort for the Eagles with 2:28 to go as Alex Povorozniak cycled out of the corner, spun and put an attempt towards the target that was tipped in by Fredericks.

Refusing to quit, the Storm got back to within one with 19 seconds left in regulation when Landon Trethewey snagged a bouncing disk between the circles and ripped it under the glove of Knoerle.

The Soo held on from there though to pick up the win, improving to 2-3 on the season.

With the close setback, Iroquois Falls dipped to 3-4 overall.
