POWASSAN, Ont. – A Dylan Bacholo marker a minute and a half into overtime lifted the Soo Eagles to a 4-3 victory over the Powassan Voodoos Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Powassan Sportsplex.
A tight-checking opening 20 minutes saw neither side convert offensively as they hit the first intermission still in search of a goal.
Second period play saw the Eagles break the deadlock just over two minutes in as Trevor Davis converted off a give-and-go as the Soo defenceman moved in and whipped a shot over the glove of Voodoos’ netminder Owen Wray from the slot.
Answering at 4:37, Jacob Dupont tied it for Powassan with a snap shot from the left circle that beat goalkeeper Gabe Rosek.
The home side then took the lead a few shifts later as Dupont clicked once again as he finished off an Alex Little set-up with a wrister from the right side.
Down by one into the third, the Eagles drew level thanks to Marc LaFrance scoring on the power play as he came out of the corner and put a shot through Wray at 2:43.
Getting that back was the Voodoos’ Jackson Buffam as he quickly buried a pass over from Cameron Lemcke that a diving Rosek could not reach.
Rallying to force extra time, Brian Fiddes bagged the equalizer during a late man advantage opportunity by finishing off a Seth Ferguson set-up with 2:59 remaining in regulation.
Then in OT, Bachalo collected a bouncing puck from in close and lifted in the game-winner to give the Soo the away decision.
With the result, the Eagles raised their record to 25-9-2-1 on the season, while with the point, Powassan slipped to 29-10-5-1 overall.
